Every Good Work
Titus 3:1-7 “Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Yesterday was about not quenching the Spirit of the Lord in our lives. Today I want to focus on the first verse of Titus 3. In Paul’s letter to Titus, we too are reminded that we need to submit ourselves to our rulers and authorities, being obedient, and ready for every good work. We could potentially break this down into multiple posts on our submission to our earthly authorities and being obedient to the law of the land, but I want to write about being ready for every good work.
When we don’t quench the Spirit in our lives and we let Him lead us, nudge us, convict us, and we cooperate with Him, we will see that He is leading us to live out the fruits of the Spirit and to perform good works to our fellow men and women. These good works while might seem inconvenient to our busy lives, they can have tremendous impact on the people around us. For example, if you were to feel that God wanted you to talk to someone about their day who you have never met, you may discover a brother or sister in the Lord who needed encouragement. Perhaps you’ll feel that God wants you to gently share the Gospel with someone and you’ll discover that their heart is already looking answer. Or maybe you reach out your hand to help those in need and it could be the hope and kindness they need to not lose faith.
Let us ask the Lord to use us for His glory. And when He nudges us to do good work, it may come at an inconvenient time or in a way that we might not want to do it, but let’s not quench the Spirit. Instead, let us follow Him.
