Let Us Not Waste the Time
Psalm 39:4 “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!”
As youth, we tend to see believe that the world is our oyster and our days will never end. We take greater risks with our own safety and assume that it’s other people who are passing away or contracting terminal illnesses. As we age, we start to realize that are not invincible and the time that we have is quite precious. David asked of the Lord to know the number of his days so that he could consider how short and fleeting life is. Why would someone want to know how many days were left on their biological life clock?
Consider, if a person assumes that they will live a long, full life, they may be tempted to procrastinate in their service to the Lord. However, a person who has diagnosed with a terminal illness has an estimate on how many days remain and will value each of those days. They may make amends with family and friends, strengthen their resolve in the Lord, or kindle a new relationship with Him.
Lord, please help us to not deceive ourselves into thinking that we have many, many more days remaining until we pass. May we treasure each and every day and live it for Your glory with the understanding that tomorrow, we could stand before You to give an account of our lives. Let us not waste the time that has been given to us because our lives are in Your hands.
