Seek First
Matthew 6:31-33 “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”
In a world full of anxiety and distractions, it is so easy to lose focus on what truly matters. We concern ourselves each day about the clothes we wear and is it what we wore yesterday or what we wore the last time we saw someone. We would not want them to think we are poor, dirty, or unorganized. Perhaps we even want their praise about our new clothes.
Similarly, food and drink are on our minds as we naturally grow hungry and thirst. We wish to ingest the things we like and make plans to indulge our sense of taste. This can lead us to overthink on food rather than simply realizing it is just another meal which the body will use what it can from it and then discard the rest.
Our eyes, minds, and hearts should be first on the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Asking ourselves how can we be like Him and live out virtues such as mercy, grace, love, forgiveness, and truth? Asking ourselves if we were living in His kingdom right now, how would He want me to act? Would He want me fretting over clothes, food, or drink or would He rather I focus on my service and praise to Him?
