The Mother of Jesus
John 19:25-27 “but standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”
Something I have come to admire in many mothers is the love and dedication to their children’s wellbeing. Many mothers would sacrifice anything for their children even their own lives. They would not allow any evil to befall their children and would willingly take the pain and place of their child.
Consider Jesus’ mother: she loved our Lord Jesus more than anything in the world and was present for His crucifixion. What agony this blessed woman had to endure watching her Child, the Son of God, be falsely accused, misunderstood, hated, plotted against, beaten, spat on, mocked, scourged, sentenced to death, and crucified. Though many parents would readily take the pain for their children if they could, Mary could not protect Him like a mother’s instincts would be telling her to. Instead, she had to trust that He knew best by allowing Himself to be delivered up. She had to helplessly endure the pain of seeing her perfect, sinless Child be killed at the hands of sinners… for sinners. It must have felt like a sword piercing her own soul (Luke 2:35), but she trusted Jesus completely.
She trusted in the angel’s word that her Son was the Christ. May we trust in the Lord’s will like Mary did even if we don’t fully understand it.
She trusted that the Son of God could do anything. May we trust in the power of God like Mary did at the wedding of Cana.
She followed Christ to Golgotha as He died on the cross for our sins. May we be willing to follow Christ like Mary did, even if that be to Golgotha.
“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation” Isaiah 12:2.
