Walking Worthy of the Calling
Ephesians 4:1-3 “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
In Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus, he urged them to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which they had been called.
In the ancient Greek, the “calling” is κλήσεως | klēseōs which is translated to mean the invitation from God to receive His gift of salvation. As followers of the Lord, we must never forget that we received a divine calling from the Lord to follow Him, to turn away from our lives of sins, to reject the secular world’s immorality, to put to death the flesh and its lusts. We are to now live for a higher purpose, a divine purpose, for God’s great purpose.
Let us walk in a manner worthy of this calling, this divine invitation. As we have already turned away from a life filled with sin and self-satisfaction, let us strive to live a life that is maintaining the unity of the Spirit. Are we not one body in Christ? Are we not one church? Are we not one bride of Christ? Let us then strive to work with one another in gentleness and humility so that we do not cause division between those who are also trying to serve the Lord with a sincere heart. Let us be patient and loving with one another and labor together to grow and mature in our faith with one another.
If we live out an active faith with love for one another, exhibiting the fruits of the Spirit, doing the good work of the Lord, then the secular world will see this. And if …”an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.” 1 Corinthians 14:24-25
